Greenspan Projects teamed up with Mike Kitchen of Rocket Gardens to deliver an event for the Co-operative ‘Little Pioneers’ nursery chain, as part of their Healthy Living and Wellbeing programme to promote growing your own vegetables and healthy eating in an early years setting.

Little Pioneers Nursery & Pre-school is the new name for the chain of nurseries owned by Mid-counties Co-operative.  With 600,000 members, Mid-counties Cooperative has been supporting  local communities for over 100 years and are proud to be the largest independent co-operative in the UK. They always keep their members at the heart of what they do, both at Little Pioneers and beyond.

At Little Pioneers, they are committed to helping little ones have the best wellbeing they can, from nourished tummies, to nurtured minds, their nurseries work hard to encourage health and wellbeing from their early years.  Their Healthy Living and Wellbeing programme develops further the work they already to ensure little ones are as happy and healthy as possible. The programme has four key parts: food provenance (farm to fork) nutrition, environment and education.

At his farm in Cornwall, Mike kitchen sows and grows thousands of organic vegetable plug plants, herbs and potted fruits ready to be delivered to your garden gate at just the right time for planting out. Growing with Rocket Gardens is a really easy way to grow your own, whether you’re a novice gardener who wants to try growing some veg, or a green-fingered pro who is short on time.

It all started in Cornwall back in 2005 with Mike’s dream of living the good life, and making it easy for others to lead the good life too. Based in Cornwall, the Rocket Farm is surrounded by fields, woodland and meadows. They have chickens, pigs, and of course, plenty of plants. They want to teach the world to grow! It’s their mission in life to make growing your own food really easy, accessible and natural, no matter the size of your plot or the level of your gardening knowledge.

Greenspan were contracted by Cooperative to come up with designs a new modular garden system providing practical growing and outdoor storage areas to be installed across their network of Little Pioneers nurseries and pre-schools across the UK. We designed wooden growing beds, apotato planter, storage and a rat proof compost bin and were invited to attend the theirannual conference wherethey introducedthe growing scheme concept to their nursery managers.

Coop introduced us to Mike Kitchen at Rocket Gardens which was the start of an excellent collaboration! We set up our bespoke raised wooden beds at the conference, which Mike then used during his planting demonstration using one of his easy to use mail order plant kits, which was very well received. Co-operative then ran a competition for one lucky nursery to win the growing area after the event!

If you are looking for a modular growing area for your early years setting, nursery, pre-school or primary school, we’d love to hear from you. At Greenspan we create bespoke outdoor spaces for educational establishments, giving you a solution that truly meets the needs of your pupils, within your budget and within a timeframe that suits your timetable.
